One night, one theme, one very specific childhood memory that inspired the design of a 7 metre Christmas Tree
A 7 Metre Christmas Tree
Bespoke Christmas tree installation at Aqua Shard: seven-metre Peter Pan themed design with illuminated Tinkerbell wings, custom clock, and hand-placed decorations
Project Overview
When our Creative Director Kay Seehra says Tinkerbell has always been her favourite, she's not exaggerating. This Aqua Shard Christmas installation proves it.
Installation at a Glance

The brief was straightforward: create something extraordinary for Christmas. What we delivered was a seven-metre Christmas tree, crafted in-house overnight and themed entirely around Peter Pan. When you're called upon to transform a space like Aqua Shard, you don't just hang baubles and call it done. This is a unique combination of opportunity and challenge. Peter Pan was chosen in partnership with with Great Ormond St. Hospital
The Peter Pan Concept: From Childhood Memory to Large-Scale Installation
Why Peter Pan?
"I've always loved Tinkerbell growing up," Kay explains. And when you're the Creative Director, your childhood obsessions can become large-scale Christmas installations at one of London's most distinctive venues.
The whole concept came from that. Not just a Christmas tree, but Neverland translated into seasonal design. Every element references J.M. Barrie's story whilst functioning as a proper Christmas decoration.
Seven-Metre Christmas Tree: Technical Execution and Structural Design
The Seven-Metre Challenge
Seven metres is substantial. That's roughly 23 feet, which means you're working at height, building in sections, and managing structural integrity whilst creating something that looks effortless.
We built the entire thing in-house. Not outsourced, not purchased pre-made.
Our team designed and constructed every element, then installed it overnight at Aqua Shard to minimise disruption to the venue's operations.
Working overnight at a venue like Aqua Shard requires coordination.
The space operates during the day, so installation happens when the restaurant's closed. You have a window, and you need to be finished and cleared out before morning service begins.
Structural Engineering
A seven-metre Christmas tree requires proper internal structure.
The framework needs to support not just the tree itself but also all decorative elements:
- Oversized baubles
- Illuminated three-metre wings
- Custom Neverland clock
- Scattered lanterns
- Tick-Tock crocodile sculpture
The engineering challenge involves more than just size—it's about weight distribution and load-bearing calculations.
Each section must balance independently whilst remaining stable when connected. The join points must be stronger than the sections themselves, which requires precise metalwork and careful consideration of how forces transfer throughout the structure.
Bespoke Design Elements: Custom Fabrication for Luxury Christmas Installations
Tinkerbell's Wings: Three Metres of Illumination

The signature element: three metres of illuminated wings representing Tinkerbell. Not subtle, not understated. Proper statement pieces that frame the tree and immediately catch attention.
The wings required custom fabrication. They needed to be large enough to make sense at that scale, well-illuminated to work with Aqua Shard's evening lighting, and structurally secure enough to remain in place throughout the season.
The Neverland Clock
Bespoke clock design referencing the story's themes about time and growing up. Positioned mid-tree, where it becomes a focal point without dominating the entire installation.
The clock wasn't purchased. We designed and created it specifically for this installation, ensuring it aligned with the scale and aesthetic of the rest of the installation.
Lanterns Throughout
Scattered lanterns nod to the story whilst adding warm lighting points throughout the tree. They create depth and visual interest at different heights, preventing the eye from just scanning up and down.
Tick-Tock the Crocodile

At the base, a crocodile waits. No Peter Pan installation is complete without the crocodile that swallowed the clock.
This element grounds the entire installation literally and thematically. It completes the narrative whilst solving the practical problem of finishing the tree's base.
Christmas Tree Colour Palette: Beyond Traditional Red and White
Deep teals, rich coppers, warm golds, emerald greens. Not traditional Christmas colours, but they work because they're cohesive and intentional.
The palette came from Neverland itself. The turquoise of mermaid lagoons, the copper of pirate treasure, the gold of fairy dust, and the deep green of the island's forests.

A traditional red and white Christmas would have been easier. It also would have been boring and wouldn't have supported the theme. When you commit to a concept, you commit fully.
Overnight Christmas Tree Installation: Process and Coordination
Installing overnight means working efficiently whilst maintaining quality. The team knows what they're doing, so it's not chaotic, but it is focused. Here's how we execute a seven-metre installation in a single night:
-
1
Structural Installation
We built the structure in sections that could be assembled on-site. The framework supports the tree itself plus all decorative elements: oversized baubles, illuminated three-metre wings, the clock, and lanterns. Transporting a seven-metre tree intact isn't practical, so it goes up in pieces, joined carefully so the seams don't show.
-
2
Lighting Systems Configuration
The tree required multiple lighting systems. The illuminated Tinkerbell wings needed their own power and controls. The lanterns throughout needed coordination. The overall tree lighting needed to work with Aqua Shard's existing ambience. We tested lighting levels during installation to ensure everything read properly in the venue's evening atmosphere—too bright and it would overwhelm the space; too dim, and the details would be lost.
-
3
Decoration Placement
At this scale, bauble placement isn't random. Each decoration is positioned to create visual balance whilst maintaining the theme. Too many in one area makes it look cluttered; too sparse, and it looks unfinished. The process involves stepping back frequently to check sight lines from different angles in the room. What looks balanced when you're standing directly in front changes when you're viewing from the side or from Aqua Shard's other levels.
-
4
Final Adjustments and Quality Check
Each person has specific responsibilities, working simultaneously on their elements and coordinating when sections need to come together. By morning service, the installation is complete and the venue's ready to operate normally. That's the requirement.
Theme Matters in Christmas Decorations
Generic Christmas trees are fine. They serve their purpose. But when you have the opportunity to create a unique luxury Christmas installation, why wouldn't you?
The Peter Pan theme transforms this from "Christmas decoration" into "installation." The wings catch attention first, then the clock, then the lanterns, then the crocodile. It's fun to discover all the layered details to engage with.
It also demonstrates what's possible when you approach seasonal design with actual creative vision rather than just following standard industry conventions.
Bespoke Christmas Installations vs. Standard Decorations
When venues consider Christmas decoration options, understanding the difference between standard hired decorations and bespoke installations helps inform the decision:
| Aspect | Standard Hired Decorations | Amarante Bespoke Installations |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Pre-made, available to multiple venues | Unique to your venue, designed for your space |
| Theme | Generic seasonal motifs | Custom narrative (e.g., Peter Pan for Aqua Shard) |
| Scale | Standard sizes, may not fit venue proportions | Designed to venue specifications (seven-metre height for Aqua Shard) |
| Fabrication | Mass-produced elements | Hand-crafted in-house (custom wings, clock, crocodile) |
| Installation | Setup within business hours or basic positioning | Overnight installation to avoid venue disruption |
| Guest Experience | Familiar, expected seasonal decoration | Multi-layered discovery (wings, clock, lanterns, crocodile) |
| Brand Alignment | Generic approach | Reflects venue's luxury positioning and unique character |
Aqua Shard: Designing Christmas Installations for Luxury London Venues

Aqua Shard's architecture is distinctive. Floor-to-ceiling windows, contemporary design, dramatic spatial volumes. The venue doesn't need decoration to be impressive.
This means your installation needs to enhance rather than compensate. The Peter Pan tree works because it's bold enough to hold its own in that space without competing with the architecture.
The seven-metre height fits Aqua Shard's proportions. In a smaller venue, it would be overwhelming. Here, it's an appropriate scale.
In-House Christmas Tree Creation
"Crafted entirely in-house" isn't just marketing language. It means our team designed, built, and installed everything you see.
- The wings: designed and fabricated by our team.
- The clock: unique, created for this luxury Christmas installation.
- The structure: built to our specifications.
- The theme execution: conceptualised and realised internally.
Bespoke design matters because it gives you complete control over the final result: You're not limited by what's commercially available or by what another vendor can provide. If the vision requires something specific, you build it.
Kay's Vision: Personal Stories in Commercial Christmas Design
There is a personal connection with this installation. This isn't a corporate Christmas installation designed by committee. It's a creative vision executed with technical skill.
Kay's approach to design focuses on creating experiences, not just pretty things. The Peter Pan Christmas tree tells a story, creates atmosphere, and gives people something to engage with beyond the merely adequate "a nice tree."
Transforming London Venues with Seasonal Installations

This seven-metre Christmas tree transformed Aqua Shard whilst fitting seamlessly into the space. A bespoke luxury installation for Christmas that references a beloved story cherished for generations, functioning as a sophisticated seasonal design. This project demonstrates what's achievable when Christmas decorations are approached as a creative opportunity rather than a seasonal obligation.
The tree created an atmosphere for every guest who experiences Aqua Shard during the Christmas holidays. That was our goal: not just momentary impact, but sustained experience.
